Nearly 400 jewels, watches and decorative objects from the Cartier archive, most never before shown in Australia — this winter's blockbuster at the NGV. Friday nights add live music and late sessions through July.

Lightscape — Royal Botanic Gardens after dark

Twenty new light installations along an illuminated evening trail through the gardens — the winter fixture that sells out its weekend sessions, gentler on a weeknight.

The 2.2km trail is flat and paced for strolling, with food and warm-drink stops along the way. Early sessions suit anyone who prefers to be home by nine.

Puffing Billy — Train of Lights

The century-old steam railway strung with thousands of lights, running evening journeys through the Dandenong Ranges for the school-holiday weeks only.

Ballarat Winter Festival

Three weeks of ice skating, light shows and a town-wide hot chocolate showdown across Ballarat's heritage centre.

The hot-chocolate trail through Ballarat's cafes is the gentle way in — flat streets, plenty of warm stops, and V/Line gets you there without driving.
